Position Summary:
The Controller is responsible for leading and actively executing the accounting and financial reporting functions of Five Rivers Cattle Feeding, LLC, including feedlot operations across multiple locations. This is a hands-on leadership role that requires direct involvement in daily accounting activities, financial close, and reporting, while also guiding the accounting team and supporting operational leadership. The Controller ensures accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of financial information while driving process improvements and scalable solutions in a complex, multi-site agricultural environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Accounting & Financial Reporting (Hands-On Execution)
- Directly participate in and oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and lender reporting.
- Lead and actively execute the month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries, reconciliations, and review of results.
- Personally review and, when needed, prepare general ledger entries, account reconciliations, and support schedules.
- Personally prepare and manage the Fixed Assets process from start to finish, including the capitalization of projects through the preparation of the monthly depreciation entries.
- Ensure accuracy and completeness of financial data across all systems and locations.
Operational & Feed Yard Accounting (Embedded Support)
- Work directly with feed yard accounting teams on day-to-day transactions, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring accurate data capture.
- Step in as needed to support accounts payable, receivable, inventory, and billing processes during peak periods or staffing gaps.
- Partner closely with operations leadership to understand cost drivers and improve financial reporting at the yard level.
- Maintain visibility into fixed assets and capital expenditures, including hands-on review and validation.
Leadership & Team Development (Working Leader)
- Lead, mentor, and develop Senior Accountants, and feed yard accounting staff.
- Delegate effectively while remaining actively engaged in detailed work and problem-solving.
- Provide direct support and coaching to team members in both corporate and field locations.
- Build a culture of accountability, responsiveness, and continuous improvement.
Audit, Compliance & Internal Controls
- Serve as a liaison with external auditors and actively manage audit deliverables, including preparation of PBC schedules.
- Assist the CFO in developing and enforcing accounting policies and internal controls, with direct involvement in implementation.
- Perform hands-on review of controls, reconciliations, and compliance processes.
Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Analysis
- Actively participate in building budgets, forecasts, and projections in partnership with operations.
- Prepare and review variance analysis, identifying key drivers and actionable insights.
- Manage the Capital budget process
- Support CFO with detailed financial reporting for lenders and ownership.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Serve as a hands-on resource and super user for accounting and operational systems.
- Identify inefficiencies, automate manual processes, and implement workflow improvements.
- Collaborate with IT and developers to enhance reporting tools and data accuracy.
- Test, implement, and support system enhancements and process changes.
Other Duties
- Lead or support special projects, system implementations, and ad hoc financial analysis as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA strongly preferred.
- 8–12+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership roles with hands-on responsibilities.
- Experience in agriculture, cattle feeding, livestock production, manufacturing, or multi-site operations strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, cost accounting, and internal controls.
- Experience with ERP systems required; Microsoft 365 Business Central preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial analysis tools required.
- Experience with hedge/derivative accounting is a plus.
