Assistant Feed Department Manager

JOB TITLE: Assistant Feed Department Manager

REPORTS TO: Feed Department Manager

FLSA STATUS: Salaried, Ag Exempt

FUNCTION: Assists in directing and coordinating activities of workers engaged in the daily feeding of livestock by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Sets a positive example for employees by modeling safe work practices and following safety rules and policies. Communicates critical safety information to employees by conducting regular safety training; monitors workplace for unsafe/non-compliant behavior.

  • Assists in the management of non-supervisory employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

  • Monitors cattle intake and assigns subsequent distribution of feed by familiarizing self with cattle eating patterns according to gender, days on feed, weather, and breed; maximizes feed intake of cattle by following guidelines issued by consulting nutritionist.

  • Ensures accurate feed delivery by monitoring feed bunks and assessing feed distribution, quantity, type, and timeliness of delivery.

  • Ensures that newly received cattle are fed in a timely manner by coordinating feeding with the cattle department.

  • Minimizes truck downtime by scheduling maintenance/repair; develops and implements feed truck preventative maintenance program; performs servicing on feed trucks, hay machine, and tractors.

  • Maintains cattle feeding records by compiling, entering, and analyzing information.

  • Issues special feeding or bunk sweeping instructions during inclement weather.

  • Participates in the development of department capital and operating budgets; manages expenses by studying historical data, anticipating needs, and researching costs.

  • Fills in when a driver is absent or as necessary by operating a feed truck, hay machine, or tractor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Undergraduate degree; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge of Word Processing software; Spreadsheet software and Database software.

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to airborne particles. The employee is frequently exposed to work near moving mechanical parts and outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The employee is frequently required to climb or balance.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and shovel feed on a regular basis. Able to sit for long periods of time, standing, bend, reach above and below shoulder level, climb, carry, push/pull, grip. All demands associated with driving a vehicle.
